A Decade of Delta: The Leadership Lesson We Almost Skipped (Until Our Team Made Us Practice What We Preach)
Ten years.
That's how long Leadership Delta has been helping organizations build cultures where people are proud to stay and grow. A decade of leadership development, coaching, transformation, and impact.
And you know what we almost did? Let it pass with a quiet "thanks, everyone" before moving on to the next thing.
Sound familiar?
The Leader's Paradox: Why We're Terrible at Celebrating Our Own Wins
Here's the thing about leaders. We're wired for forward momentum. We close a deal and immediately think about the next target. We hit a milestone and our minds jump to what's next. It's relentless, and while that drive is a strength, it creates a massive blind spot.
Laura admits this is her personal challenge too. "I'm not good at celebrating, if I'm being honest. I think the challenge that people have is that they move on to the next thing... We forget the ripple effect that it causes with the rest of the team that has been pouring their heart into that significant project, client pitch, or stretch goal that felt out of reach at times."
This tendency gets amplified by the speed of modern work and the reality of our work-life blend. There's always another email, another meeting, another fire to put out. Pausing to celebrate feels indulgent. Unnecessary. Something we'll do "when we have time."
But here's what that costs: When we fail to recognize achievements, we starve our teams of the emotional fuel they need to stay engaged. Morale drops. Great people start looking elsewhere. The culture we're working so hard to build slowly erodes.
Then Our Team Schooled Us
This month, as our 10-year anniversary approached, Courtney and Kristin had other plans. Behind the scenes, they quietly collected video messages from clients, friends, alumni, and supporters of Leadership Delta and Laura. Messages about impact. About transformation. About moments when something clicked and leadership felt different - better, more human, more possible.
They compiled it all and presented it to Laura on our actual anniversary date.
The result? Tears. Joy. And something we didn't expect - Laura kept rewatching it. Over and over. Each time with the same smile, the same sense of wonder, the same realization: Oh. This is what we've been building.
That's when it hit us. We were experiencing exactly what we teach.
Celebration isn't about ego or self-congratulation. It's about recognizing impact, honoring the journey, and creating the emotional connection that makes all the hard work worth it. And we had been about to skip right past it.
So let's do this properly. Let's celebrate. And let's talk about why this matters so much for every leader reading this.
From Recognition to Appreciation: What Actually Fuels People
For years, celebration lived in the "nice to have" category. Important but not urgent.
The data tells a different story. Frequent, meaningful recognition is a powerful driver of performance and retention. It's not about being nice - it's about understanding what actually motivates people to bring their best.
But here's the distinction that matters: People prefer to be appreciated over being recognized.
Think about it like love languages for the workplace. For one team member, a heartfelt "thank you" hits differently than public recognition. For another, showing belief in their ability to tackle a new challenge means more than any award. For someone else, it's carving out time to really listen to their ideas.
When you understand how each person on your team receives appreciation, and then actually deliver it, you're not just celebrating. You're building the kind of culture where people are proud to stay and grow.
This cascades. When appreciation flows from you through your leadership team and into every corner of your organization, it stops being a practice and becomes your DNA.
Ten Years of Impact
Over the past decade, we've partnered with incredible organizations. Companies like American Crystal Sugar, where a six-year partnership has tangibly transformed their culture by focusing on accountability, teamwork, and communication. Bright leaders who've gone through Delta Academy and returned to their organizations with new confidence, new skills, and a new language for leadership.
Every client story, every testimonial, every "I used what I learned in your forum during my interview and got promoted" message, those are the ripples Laura was talking about. And when you see them all together? It's overwhelming in the best way.

A Gratitude That Matters
Laura expresses her gratitude to her team, Courtney, Kristin, and yes, even our resident furballs Zoey Mae and Bo, who keep this mission moving forward every day.
To her professional networks and client partners who've trusted us with their leadership development journeys.
To her family, "including my mom, who is our number one fan."
And to the entire Leadership Delta community, every alumnus, every participant, every leader who's embraced The Delta Method and brought it back to their teams. You're the ripple effect. You're the reason this work matters.
Here's to the Future
The work continues. Human-centered leadership isn't just our mission, it's what the next generation of leaders needs to create positive cultures and shared languages. We're excited to keep building, keep learning, and keep supporting the leaders who are ready to make real change in their organizations.
So yes, we're celebrating. We're pausing. We're appreciating the impact of a decade of work before we dive into what's next.
Because that's what great leaders do. They recognize the journey, honor the people who made it possible, and create the emotional connection that makes everyone want to keep going.
The time is now. Not just to build better leaders, but to celebrate the ones who are already showing up, doing the work, and making the impact.
Together, we can make an impact.
